Gurudas Kamat graduated from Goa College of Art in 1982 with a BFA in Applied Art, specialising in Media and Design. Before establishing the practice, he spent two years in Mumbai working across advertising, graphic design, interior design, photography, and cinematography -- not as sequential careers but as simultaneous disciplines, pursued in parallel because the underlying instinct was always the same: understand how things are made, at every level, before you presume to direct them. He returned to Goa in 1984, read the landscape, and moved into the space that was open.
Inside Out Design was formally established in 1988.
Over the three decades that followed, the practice worked across the full range of built and designed environments. In hospitality: the Taj Group, the Leela Group, and Hotel Palacio de Goa. In government and institutional work: EDC, GTDC, GIDC, GSIDC, DITC, GCCI, and PCMC in Pune. In media and publishing: the Navhind Times, O Heraldo, Sakal, and Gomantak. In national retail: Sony and Apple India showrooms in Panjim. In corporate and financial services: the Dempo Group in Panjim, D-Link, Gati, Wall Street Finance, and Raj Travels. In the restaurant space: Cafe Tato, Casa Minino in Ponda, and La Pavillion in Mapuca, each completed with full branding. Across residential and commercial work: projects spanning Goa and India, including a relationship with Vicco Laboratories extending over 25 years across Goa, Mumbai, Dombivali, and Nagpur.
In 2004, the practice completed the conservation, renovation, and adaptive reuse of the historic Goa Medical College building in a record 90 days, in preparation for the inaugural International Film Festival of India in Goa. The building was handed over ahead of schedule. It remains in use.
The practice has always moved toward what is emerging rather than consolidating what is established. Today that means integrating generative AI into the design process -- for ideation, spatial visualisation, and material research -- not as a novelty but as a genuine extension of the same curiosity that has driven the work since 1982.
Inside Out Design is based in Goa. It takes a limited number of projects each year.
